Acrylic Resins

Acrylic resins are a group of thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics that include familiar materials like Plexiglas and Lucite. Acrylics are used in everything from paint and adhesives to hard plastic products with various light-transmitting properties, such as camera lenses and smartphone screens.

These materials continue to grow in popularity, as acrylic resins have proven to be more durable and versatile than many other plastics. The excellent durability and weather resistance of acrylics has made them the material of choice for plastic products used in outdoor applications, while acrylics’ high transparency and tensile strength makes them a sturdy substitute for glass items such as airplane windows and aquariums.

Advantages of Acrylics

  • Excellent durability and high hardness
  • High water, chemical, and weather resistance
  • Very high transparency
  • High tensile strength, good impact strength

Properties of Acrylic Resins

Though there are many different types of acrylics, in general, these materials are highly resistant to abrasion, UV, corrosion, and chemicals. Acrylics can also transmit and/or filter UV light. Acrylic materials also provide good insulative properties.

Available in optically clear or colored varieties, acrylics offer high light transmittance, with a Refractive Index of 1.49. Acrylics are unaffected by water and moisture (including total immersion), aqueous solutions of most lab chemicals, cleaners, alkalis, and diluted organic acids. These materials can be sanded or polished to achieve a fine finish.
